Paul’s communication was brilliant, always available to answer any queries I had. As is always the case in the advertising world the turn around is very fast, which Paul wasn’t phased by. Paul and his team managed to redecorate three rooms in very little time and to a very high standard.

I’d like to start by saying that Paul’s work is excellent. He totally transformed our home and made any blemishes vanish. His work really is outstanding. However, (and it is with a heavy heart that I mention this) our overall experience have gone from one that we were thrilled with to one that we are disappointed with. Make no mistake, the work that Paul has done is near perfect and the work alone is the reason why this is a 4 star review and not a 2 star review. One of the great things about Paul is that from the moment you get in touch with him he works hard to earn your trust. You feel like he is someone who you can rely on to get the job done right and be honest throughout. Unfortunately there is not enough space here to go into all of the detail but the short of it is: was quoted a price and told it would take 5 days, we later had some work done and asked Paul to quote us again, he told us it'd be a very reasonable extra £70, first week of work was moving slowly but price was agreed so it didn't matter, Paul said the job was bigger than he expected, dropped hints about being paid more money but didn't outright ask, took two weeks, final bill was 60% more than what we were quoted. Paul never mentioned how much extra his time would cost, what his day rate was or that he would even be charging by the day. As far as we were aware we had a quote for the initial work, an additional cost for the filling and that was that. Any other costs should have been discussed directly, in absolute terms. You should never keep the customer in the dark about this. Our final bill was 60% higher than we had budgeted for. We were shocked, disappointed and felt that it was highly unprofessional not to be upfront about it sooner. He should have sat down and been very honest with us, saying something like: ‘I underestimated how much work this was going to be when I first gave you the quote. It looks like the work is going to take two weeks in total instead of one. Because I underestimated how long it would take and gave you an incorrect quote would you be happy to meet me in the middle by paying 50% of my day rate until the work is done?” Or even "I’m sorry this is taking longer than expected, I know I gave you a quote for X amount but if it’s ok with you I’d like to add an extra £200-£300 to help cover the costs while I get this done for you.” Either of these would have been a thoughtful compromise and we probably would have even insisted that we pay the full day rate anyway. But a discussion like this never happened and the experience has suffered because of it. The silly thing is that the final invoice is still very reasonable and is actually a very similar cost to quotes we had from other decorators. Yes we went with Paul because his quote was cheaper, but we also would have gone with Paul even if his price was the same as others - and that is what makes this situation so frustrating. Had Paul told us from the beginning (or even on his second visit) that the total cost would have to increase then we would have been fine with it. It’s not so much the increase in costs that have disappointed us (although, it was one of the main reasons we chose New Look Decorators), it’s that we weren’t made aware of until a few days before the work was finished. Discussing the situation with my partner she asked if I thought if Paul had purposely low-balled the original price in order to get the job. I’d like to think that this wasn’t the case but regardless, if a customer starts thinking things like this then the damage is already done and you’ve lost their trust. His work is top-notch and I honestly think that you’d be hard to find anyone with more attention to detail. Had he been upfront about the additional costs then I'd be singing his praises, recommending him to everyone and be handing his business cards out myself. We hope that Paul takes this feedback and learns from it so that he can improve his service and truly delight his customers. People will pay for great quality, but the experience is everything.
